In The Palm Of Your Hand: Palm Phone Feature

by Melissa Smich on August 11, 2010

palm preIn 2010, there are countless phone models and services to choose from. Some of the most popular phones today are the phones with multitasking capabilities. In this world where everyone is constantly “on the go,” and there exist several tech devices for several tasks, it is convenient to have a hand held device in which all of the days important functions can be completed in the palm of one’s hand.  One phone and brand has been providing this convenience for longer than most others.

A Palm phone is just what it sounds like: a mobile phone made to be palmed by its user. Rather than a bulky “brick” phone or a small cell phone, a Palm is designed to be held comfortable for a significant amount of time. Marketed by Palm, Inc. (also known in the past as Palm Computing Platforms), these smartphones have been popular for more than fifteen years. Recently, Palm was purchased as a subsidiary of Hewlett Packard, one of the top computer companies in the world.  This merger will only help to expand the already massive and impressive distribution of the Palm.

Palm’s unique style made it different than the Blackberry. The Palm has a keypad that slides from within the phone, making the phone more compact when necessary. The Pam features phone and internet service, in addition to a host of applications. It is based on the Linux operating system. The latest version of the Palm is called the Palm Pre, which was launched in the summer of 2009.  The Palm Pre is slightly smaller than other smartphones, but contains a keypad, a camera, Bluetooth, internal wireless, and AGPS chip used for navigation. The Palm Pre’s Wi-Fi internet capability can be used for web browsing and downloading. Users can also access and use Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites with the Palm. The Palm also offers several games, including 3D and interactive gaming.

Unlike other smartphones that currently operate with exclusive phone company services, the Palm Pre is available for both Verizon Wireless and AT&T, expanding the options that phone users can choose from. This is one of the the clear advantages that Palm had over other choices; there is a wider range of possible coverage areas, and therefore, less of a chance of service glitches and outages.

Since the Palm phone’s debut debut, there have been various models of the Palm, such as the palm pilot.

I’ve never owned a Palm, but from the description it sounds like there’s nothing I would do with a phone that the Palm can’t do.

The iPhone’s been my smartphone of choice, but from the sound of it I think I might like the Palm. I love compact things.
