Will The Xbox For Windows Phone 7 Give iPhone a Run For Its Money?

by Melissa Smich on August 30, 2010

Windows Phone7Xbox LiveIn the world of mobile gaming iPhone seems fairly comfortable at the top.  But now, with Microsoft waiting in the wings for their grand entrance, the Apple giant is in trouble.  With Xbox for Windows Phone 7 a new age in portable gaming (and gaming in general) has dawned.

The beauty of this new partnership is in the ability to cross over from console to mobile and back again.  Smooth, sleek and ultra convenient, Xbox Live will amalgamate all of action and allow you to keep up with your gaming friends wherever you are.  It’s a shame that iPhone doesn’t have something similar and too bad that other popular portable gaming systems like the PSP and DS also fall short.

How Does It Work?

A demo by Microsoft showed the Spotlight section that will appear on your Windows Phone 7, containing your Xbox Live avatar and connections to consoles, PCs and other mobile gamers.

Xbox PR tells us that only the top games by high end developers will be set to go this holiday season.  The “Try Before You Buy” concept is a good one, allowing you to discover your favorite games before sinking your hard earned cash.  This feature will also give you a sense of the power Xbox for Windows Phone has, with excellent graphics, compatibility and a selection that will be unmatched in mobile gaming.

Why Topple iPhone?

While Mac and PC users have battled for years over desktops and laptops, Apple has reigned in the mobile gaming league since its release.  Nothing else really comes close to the convenience of having your cell, WiFi and superior gaming all in one package.  Microsoft had yet to break into the cell industry in any real way, until now.

With the launch of Windows Phone 7 and the combination with Xbox Live, the age old battle can move to the mobile world.  Fanatics and funny TV commercials are sure to be a result, but we might also see many iPhone users jump ship, drawn by the gaming features of the Windows Phone 7.  As long as the mobile itself is reliable and as fun to use as it looks, the Xbox capabilities may see this phone pull out ahead of the iPhone.

Hard to believe?

Only the serious gamers can truly make or break this trend.  Either way, it’s already an impressive play by Microsoft and an exciting move in the battle of tech giants.

I agree that this could revolutionize mobile gaming. For Windows to hold this phone until after the iPhone 4 furor subsided–not to mention right around the holiday season–seems like an impressive strategy.

If the commercials alone don’t hook millions of new customers, I’m sure the “Try Before You Buy” program will. You reall have to be confident in your product to offer that!

I don’t want to be a wet blanket here, but will having Xbox on their phone be a good thing for kids? They certainly seem to spend enough time with Xbox as it is!
