Cool New Devices: Pogoplug

by Melissa Smich on September 8, 2010

At mail2web.com, we understand the importance of being able to reach your files and contet from anywhere, anytime. That’s one of the reasons we love our web mail, mobile push and sync, Sharepoint, Microsoft Exchange and this new tool that’s garnering a lot of buzz: Pogoplug.

Pogoplug is a media server that will keep you always connected with all your video, music, files, etc. It is meant to truly digitize your life and keep you connected no matter where you may be. Basically, what Pogoplug does is, it connects all your external hard disk drives over to the net so that you can access while on the move.

Thanks to Pogoplug, you can easily share all your home videos and movies, high resolution photographs, songs and  you can also stream videos, photos and music to your Blackberry handheld or an iPhone or even to the latest Motorola Droid handsets.

Setting up the Pogoplug device is as easy as a walk in the park. Simply plug it into any FAT32, or NTFS slot or plug in a ext2 or ext3 drive into the box. Plug the device box into a router and follow the simple setup process which guides you for moving about. Though you may think plugging the device into a router is a step backwards in this age where everything is going wire-free, currently there is no other device available, let alone another plug-in option.

After you log-in to your Pogoplug account on the internet, your drive is displayed as if it’s just another hard disk drive that you are accessing. From the online portal, you can either, browse through your files, copy them or even stream files of multiple formats. There is even an option of downloading them to the local computer or hand held device. If you have access to write the hard disk drive, then you can even carry out basic functions such as renaming files, moving them or even deleting them from the external hard disk.

What’s more, you can even download one small software set from the internet that will enable your drive to be mounted as a network drive, one that can be accessed by many people simultaneously. The iPhone application which you will require for opening streamed files, will allow you to listen to background audio and also let you download the files locally to your device.

All in all, the Pogoplug is a very smart little device that lets you do a lot of things and at the same time does not cost a lot.

Yeah, Pogoplug is great, except when I gotta look at my relatives’ home movies on their Blackberries at family barbecues!

Pogoplug is definitely great. It’s also blurred the lines between home life and work life even more, which I guess is kind of a mixed blessing.
