Top 5 Travel Tools for Tech Geeks

by Jeremy Adams on September 1, 2010

Laptop_picVacation or business trip, you just can’t leave technology behind while on the road.  These must-have mobile tools for travelling will keep your tech mojo at full throttle and make the trip a better, more relaxing time.

1)      Global Cell Phone

This almost goes without saying nowadays, but if your mobile is still stuck in the dark ages of black outs and humongous roaming charges, get a cell that will go global with you.  Otherwise how can you eat, pray and love all around the world.  Sheesh.

2)      Awesome Adaptor

Somehow there are still countries around the world that haven’t been assimilated and convinced to start using the electrical outlets that we use in North America.  So if you’re heading anywhere offshore or south of the border, be sure to have an adaptor.  There is an all-in-one device by Hammacher Schlemmer that will actually detect the incoming voltage for you and then convert and supply it to a handy 120-volt outlet.

3)      Flexible and Reliable Email

Trying to check your work email while on holiday? Can’t access your school account from the cottage? Why not use the totally free and absolutely convenient services of mail2web webmail, a secure and fast way to pick up the mail from your own existing address from nearly any POP3 or IMAP4 server.  It’s easy to retrieve, reply, sort through and even clean up your email – even when miles away from your computer and email program.

4)      Indestructible Storage Cases

Invest in some seriously heavy duty plastic cases to store your equipment during your travels.  We’re not talking knock offs from the dollar store, but decent sized boxes with thick plastic and rubberized bumpers to keep them from shattering and causing damage during your flights and transfers.

5)      GPS Phototagger

This little gadget is pretty cool and also eliminates the need to remember the name and stats of every place you visit.  Take photos to your heart’s content and leave the memory work to this piece of equipment that actually takes a snapshot of where you are, including date and time.  Then, back at home in the comfort of your laptop or desktop, special software combines those snapshots with your still digital shots and bam!  You’ll know exactly where you were, down to the longitude and latitude.  Told you it was cool.

Wherever it is you go and whatever it is you like to do, these tech tools will make your trip easier and more fun.  Relax and enjoy travel with essential technologies right alongside.

Flexible and reliable email is important to me, even though I try hard not to look at my email when I’m traveling. (It never works out, though.)
