Samsung’s 3mm-Thick HDTV: Are Celebrities Getting Thinner?

We heard some rumors about Samsung’s latest LCD HDTV. The South Korean giant challenges Sony’s XEL-1 OLED TV and the Panasonic Z1 Plasma.

It is only 3mm thick! As far as we know, Samsungs new 40’’ LED backlit LCD HDTV will have 120Hz LCD panel, 1080p, 5000:1 contrast ratio.

HP DreamScreen

The HP DreamScreen moves digital photo frames to a whole new level and adds a brand new dimension to sharing your digital content, besides it sleek and stylish!

You can update your Facebook status, listen to Pandora Internet Radio or even watch videos. The HP DreamScreen has two different display sizes 10.2 inches and 13.3 inches.

Both units have built-in 6-in-2 card readers that accept CF and SD cards. It has 2 GB of built-in memory, black flush glass display, touch-enabled controls, Wi-Fi and social media hub and integrated speakers to listen to music.

The DreamScreen can support MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4 and H.264 for video extensions and MP3, WMA, AAC and WAV for music. HP DreamScreen can be easily connected to your PC. DreamScreen 100 is available today for $250, while the DreamScreen 130 is expected to be available on October 11.

LG 15 inch OLED TV

LG also showed a 15 inch 1366×768 OLED TV at IFA2009. It’s the largest OLED screen seen since Sony announced their 11 inch XEL-1 back in January 2008. Not many details were provided by LG, aside from the fact that the thing is 3 millimeters thick, weighs 320g, and that the display is active matrix organic light-emitting diode. The response time is an amazing 0.004ms.

OLED displays with their high contrast, low response time, low energy use and outstanding color gamut have a great future if they can bring the cost down.

LG Borderless LCD TVs

LG announces two new LCD TVs, models SL9000 and SL8000. They’re calling them borderless TVs in the sense that the front glass covers the entire surface area thus providing no sense of a boundary…at least when they’re off.

The SL9000 has a 3,000,000:1 contrast ratio and is very thin at 2.9cm thanks to el-cheapo edge-lit LEDs. 100Hz refresh rate.

And model SL8000 reverts to CCFL for back lighting, so it’s thicker at 4.5cm and achieves a 150,000:1 contrast ratio. An outstanding 200Hz refresh rate.

Not pictured is un-borderless premium model LH9000 which boasts a 5,000,000:1 ratio thanks to being direct-lit with a full array of LEDs helped out by local dimming. An upscale version, the LH9500, also has an uncompressed wireless HDMI connection. Please see this link for a good review of the LH9500 together with pictures. About $4291.

Sony Plans to 3D-ify Your Home

Sony will introduce 3D-capable products for home entertainment in 2010. Such items will include a 1080p LCD TV in the Bravia line, and will extend to personal computers, Sony’s PlayStation gaming console and Blu-ray proucts. A demonstration 3D-capable Bravia LCD TV was exhibited at IFA2009 as shown above.

The stereoscopic illusion will require that the viewer wear special ‘active shutter’ glasses that open and close in unison with the display, so as to transmit the correct image to the correct eye. This requires that the glasses be powered and have wireless connectivity to the TV or monitor. By contrast, most movie theater 3D is achieved via the much simpler polarization.

NEC MultiSync LCD8205 82-Inch Monitor

NEC introduces the LCD8205, an 82-inch LCD monitor intended mainly for digital signage…or very large/sturdy desks.

The LCD8205 is deemed professional-grade, which means that you pay more, but in return, get the following features for free: supports video walls up to 4×4 displays, color temperature adjustment, temperature sensors, burn-in protection, etc. Great for airport departure lounges, and the like.

Sony XR1 W1 ZX1 X1 Series of Bravia LCD TVs

Sony’s alphabet soup method of naming products continues with the pending launch of the XR1, W1, ZX1 and X1 series of LCD TVs with a total of 8 models.

The top of the line is the 55-inch KDL-55XR1. The 55XR1 has 1000000:1 contrast, Triluminos RGB LED backlighting for 122% NTSC in 1080p. Image massaging, er processing, is via Bravia Engine 2 Pro, Motionflow PRO 120Hz and DRC-MFv3, all working together to reduce noise, improve contrast, produce more & better colors, smooth motion and unconvert to 1080p where necessary. 750,000 Yen.

Sony sez the XR1 has “the highest picture quality in the history of Bravia” … remains 2b seen.

Sony and Their New 240Hz LCD TV

Sony just introduced an LCD TV that generates an astonishing frame rate of 240Hz – by comparison most TVs operate at a lowly 60Hz. This quadrupling of frame rate is thx to Sony’s MotionFlow software which interpolates 3 new frames from each old one and so creates very smooth motion.

The model is called the Sony Bravia KDL-52XBR7 LCD TV and should be available in Dec 08.

While 240Hz should help those who perceive judder, suffer from photosensitive and pattern-sensitive epilepsy, or watch fast-action sports, most viewers might not notice the difference.

Other features for the 52XBR7 include: 1080p 52-inch screen, 9.9mm thick and a contrast ratio of 80,000:1.

Samsung OLED TVs at IFA 2008

Samsung showed off 2 nice OLED based prototype TVs at IFA 2008, one at 14-inches the other at 31. The 31-inch model has a resolution of 1920×1080, brightness at 550 cd/m, contrast at 1M:1 and an outstanding pixel response time of 0.1ms. Extra thin at under 4mm. Due in 2010 … we’re saving up.

SED TV Resurfaces?

At Gigazine, someone with sharp eyes spotted a help wanted ad from SED Inc. looking for operators of clean room manufacturing equipment.

While the advertisement might mean nothing at all, it could also mean that SED Inc. is at long last ramping up for production of the elusive SED TV … having put their lawsuit with Applied Nanotech Holdings Inc. behind them. Although we’re leaning towards the former but hoping for the latter, all this may be irrelevant because improvements in LCD, LCD/LED, OLED and AMOLED displays keep whittling away at the SED advantages.
