Default Tips on avoiding going over minutes

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'd love some tips on how to avoid ALWAYS going over my monthly minutes.

some phones have timer apps which have an audible alert that you can set. Set it to ring after 20 minutes for each call to help avoid going over.

The timer app is a great idea--although I guess you have to have an understanding person on the other line when you suddenly have to hang up on them!

Keep checking your usage, too, especially during the second half of the month. This will keep you aware of how many minutes you can spare.

How have the new laws that forbid "data bill shock" at the end of the month made avoiding going over minutes easier? I've been curious to see how much of an effect these laws will actually have.
