What are Symbian phones?

Does anyone know what Symbian phones are? I have never heard of them before, are they something similar to skype?

Its a Mobile Phone OS. Many mobile phone manufacturers use it as the OS on some of their phones, one of the most known being Sony Ericsson.

Their website has a very "indie" look and feel to it, is it open source type stuff or are they just looking for good developers to broaden Symbian's appeal?

To be honest, I'm not really sure. I know there are a few different versions of Symbian, so they may allow device manufacturers to cusotmize the OS to fit more closely with their designs.

Now that you mention it, I haven't heard much about S.E. phones recently either. It seems like a few brands that used to have a good foot hold might be getting outdone by their competitors. Maybe they just aren't as competitive in the modern market as they once were Zac.

So symbian is just an operating system I have not heard a lot about it is it popular or is it one of those things that is every where but technical novices know nothing about it even though they use it

i haven't seen any phones that mention this particular operating system either which is odd since it is important enough to have it's own section here. is it only used by sony phones and that's why?
