    Unhappy [IMAP issue] Read receipt automatically send by the server despite my deny

    Hi,

    Just another issue but with the imap function this time.

    A "mail receipt" is automaticly send by the mail server when i receive an email sended with "read receipt" header setted (Return-Receipt-To and read it thru imap.

    This is weared since my email client ask me if i want to send a receipt.

    Their is also a second "issue"..
    If i accept to send a receipt on my client , two are in reality received by the email sender:
    - One from the server;
    - One from my mail client ;

    This is the headers of the "automaticly one", i've replaced my email by mXXXXXX:

    MIME-Version: 1.0

    The read receipt have to be disabled for the imap interface since the client is in charge of it.

    PS:

    It's already possible to disable the read receipt notication for the webmail OWA thru the OWA setting page.

    This is a "feature" of Microsoft Exchange 2007 as outlined here:

    Duplicate Read Receipts Are Sent When Using POP3 or IMAP4

    The solution is to view your email in Outlook Web Access or Outlook (as an Exchange account, available for our mail2web Mobile Email Pro users). If you use these clients then only one read receipt is sent.

    The other solution is to change the setting in your other email client to "never send read receipts", this way only 1 will be sent.

    Hi Tim,

    It's a "shame" for Microsoft to call a "issue" a feature (.
    The client have to parse the message header and to proceed them.

    Why did there do this on their IMAP to MAPI implementation ?

    I hope they open theirs eyes and see one day the difference between bugs and "feature" .

    I "like" this extract from the link you give me back:
    ...........
    This behavior is a feature of Exchange 2007. This feature helps ensure that the sender who requests a read receipt receives an acknowledgement that the mail was downloaded to the recipient's mailbox. This feature also provides the sender with an additional acknowledgement when the recipient opens the message and clicks OK in the dialog box that asks them if they want to send a read receipt.
    ...........

    So, it's a "double" aknowledgment ... and a defect for me ... and maybe for 99% of peoples who have a "brain" lool.

    Yeah, I always laugh whenever a bug is described as a feature. Still, are there any benefits at all to duplicate receipts being sent? (In case one's accidentally deleted, for instance?)
