How often to they update windows mobile? Or is that something that your phone will do automatically?

Generally the updates come from your Cellular Service provider or from the Device Manufacturer. You can contact them to see if there are any Windows Mobile OS updates available for your specific device.

Microsoft of course is always improving their OS and working on new versions for the next generation of devices, but those devices that are already in the marketplace may not be compatible with the latest release.
